What Makes AR and VR Different?

Lately, technology is developing faster and faster. This has led to the emergence of many new technological tools which may be confusing for some. One example is the emergence of AR and VR. Similar naming often makes people think that AR and VR are the same technology when they actually have some differences.

Augmented Reality or AR is a technology that combines two or three dimensional virtual objects into a real environment and in real time. One example of the application of AR technology is the Pokemon GO game, which went global some time ago. AR works using computer vision that can make the camera collect, send and process the images or videos obtained to display the digital content that the user wants.

Virtual Reality or VR is a computer-based technology that is able to create a simulation from the real or alternate world. The application of VR that is most often encountered is in both computer and PS games. In VR, users can feel the real simulation through touch, hearing and the view that looks real.

Now is the time to talk about what is the difference between AR and VR that looks similar but is actually not the same :

  • AR brings the virtual world to real life, VR brings the user to the virtual world

AR technology makes users feel the virtual world where they are. For example, the famous Dulux paint brand that uses AR technology for its customers. Consumers can try before buying through an application whether the color to be purchased is suitable for their home. Not only that, AR is also applied in social media such as Instagram, SnapChat, TikTok and so on. The filter used when recording stories and taking pictures on social media is an example of the application of AR technology.

Meanwhile, VR technology serves to bring users into a virtual world. An example is when users wear a VR headset while playing games, they will feel that they are in a real game. VR can also bring users to visit places such as solar systems, museums, traveling abroad and so on. This experience can be felt by the user, starting from the sound, sights and so on.

  • Devices

AR can be used directly through a gadget or smartphone that supports AR technology. To use AR technology smoothly, up to 100 Mbps of network strength is required. Meanwhile, VR technology can only be used through special glasses produced by brands such as Oculus, Google, Sony, Samsung, HTC, Nintendo, LG and so on. To use VR technology smoothly, you need at least 50 Mbps of network strength.
